Queensland Indigenous Criminal Justice Research Agenda Reports

Following the launch of the Queensland Government’s Indigenous justice strategy Just Futures 2012 – 2015, a number of research reports commissioned under the Indigenous Criminal Justice Research Agenda were released. Topics include: Indigenous and non-Indigenous sentencing in Queensland; Diverting young Indigenous people from the Queensland youth justice system; Bail and remand experiences for Indigenous people; Rehabilitative needs and treatment of Indigenous offenders; Queensland Indigenous Alcohol Diversion Program.

Strategic Review of Indigenous Expenditure

The Department of Finance and Deregulation's Strategic Review of Indigenous Expenditure  has been published. The review endorses current the Commonwealth policy framework but indicates that the key challenge is effective implementation and delivery. In particular, it calls for a sharper focus on the performance of mainstream services and a rationalisation of the Commonwealth's Indigenous programs.

Using health policy to prevent Indigenous family violence

The Australian Family and Domestic Violence Clearinghouse has published an Issues Paper, Closing the gap on family violence: driving prevention and intervention through health policy. It argues that family violence is a significant health concern and calls for the health sector to treat family violence as core business.

Australian Government discussion paper on the Northern Territory intervention

Consultations are being held on the future of the intervention in the Northern Territory. This paper reports on the achievements to date and asks for community input on priority action areas: school attendance and educational achievement, economic development and employment, alcohol abuse, community safety and child protection, health, food security, housing and governance.

Review of Aboriginal injury prevention projects

In order to support a program funding Aboriginal injury prevention projects, NSW Health engaged the Sax Institute to review the literature on effective injury prevention projects between 1995 - 2010. The review considers alcohol restrictions and management plans, road safety initiatives, night patrols, community justice groups, petrol sniffing initiatives and multi-faceted activities.
