Reducing violence against women and their children: Research informing the development of a national campaign

Description

This research paper evaluates Australian attitudes to domestic violence. It was commissioned by the Australian Government to inform the development of a prevention of domestic violence campaign. The report finds that there is a clear link between violence towards women, and attitudes of disrespect and gender inequality and that these attitudes are unconscious, yet firmly entrenched, among many Australian adults and children. Three common attitudes are: victim blaming, minimisation of behaviour towards women and empathy with the male. The key influencers of attitudes for different groups are examined, including Indigenous people.
