This submission to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child provides an overview of law and justice issues relating to Indigenous children. The submission deals with the impact on Indigenous juveniles of public order offences and police discretion, mandatory sentencing laws and juvenile diversionary schemes, including best practice principles for juvenile diversion and Indigenous youth. The submission also outlines a number of new Indigenous community justice mechanisms being developed in Australia, as well as partnership agreements, including Aboriginal Justice Agreements, between Indigenous peoples and a number of states and territories.
