The Coen Local Justice Group : a community response to family violence in Queensland through the Local Justices Initiatives Program

This article describes the approach taken by the Coen Local Justice Group in central Cape York to addressing recurrent family violence offending at a local level. The Group’s approach involves participation in the court process by providing community advice on sentencing; the establishment of diversionary programs, including the imposition of “outstation orders”; a focus on rehabilitation and prevention, including informal recreational activities; and community ownership of the problem solving process.
