Annual data from 1992 (retrospective data available from 1980 to 1992 and a 20-year review carried out in 2012). This is a statistical database relating to deaths in custody of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous persons, including deaths in police or prison custody, deaths of juveniles in detention, deaths caused directly or indirectly by traumatic injuries sustained, and deaths occurring in attempted escapes from custody. The data collected includes age, Indigenous status, Custodial Authority in which death occurred, age and place of death, most serious offence, legal status (sentenced or unsentenced) length of time in custody, cause and manner of death. Data is collected from police services, corrections and coronial records. The lowest level of geographic classification is by state and territory.
