Aboriginal (Nunga) Courts

Description

This information bulletin outlines the development of the Aboriginal Courts in South Australia. Some preliminary statistics are presented for the three adult Nunga courts currently operating in South Australia, namely in Port Adelaide, Murray Bridge and Port Augusta. The key features of the court valued by Aboriginal people are identified and described within the context of a more culturally appropriate process than mainstream courts. Suggestions are made to further enhance the operation and effectiveness of the courts, and issues to be considered in evaluating Aboriginal courts are outlined.
