Deaths in custody in Australia: National Deaths in Custody Program 2011 – 12 and 2012 – 13

Description

This report presents data on frequencies of deaths in prison custody, and police custody and custody-related operations. The report also presents information about the deceased person including their demographics and cause of death. At 30 June 2013, the total prison population in Australia was 30,775 (including 8,430 Indigenous prisoners; 27%). Of prison custody deaths, more than two-thirds were due to natural causes, most commonly cancer, and 19% were deaths by hanging. The number of police custody deaths in 2012 – 13 dropped significantly from 2011 – 12 and is the lowest recorded since 1990.
