Four studies conducted for the Royal Commission Inquiry into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody : user's guide for the machine-readable data files

Description

This guide documents the data of four studies, each of which investigated an aspect of the broader context of aboriginal deaths in custody. The first study (601) surveyed the characteristics of all instances of police custody in Australia during a one-month period, August 1988. The second study (602) reports characteristics of all deaths which occurred among people serving non-custodial correctional orders during 1987 and 1988, in Australia and New Zealand. The third study (603) places aboriginal deaths in the context of all deaths which occurred in custody in Australia during the 1980s. The fourth study (604) describes all incidences of self-harm, including attempted suicides, which occurred in custody in Australia during a five-month period, from April to August, 1989. The guide contains a study description followed by a codebook for each of the four studies.
