This chapter provides an overview of issues facing Indigenous women in corrections. It presents a statistical overview of incarceration and recidivism rates for Indigenous women on a national and state by state basis, highlighting their over representation, and discusses over policing and sentencing patterns for Indigenous women, as well as the characteristics of Indigenous women who are imprisoned, including statistics on self harm. The chapter also discusses policy debates about Indigenous women in corrections and human rights; the specific experiences and problems of Indigenous women in corrections; and ways of addressing the needs of Indigenous women in corrections, highlighting the importance of pre and post release programs.
