Investigation into Hearing Impairment Amongst Indigenous Prisoners in the Victorian Correctional System : Project Report

Description

An investigation into hearing impairment among Indigenous prisoners in the Victorian correctional system was commissioned by Corrections Victoria. This study tested the hearing status of 109 Victorian Indigenous prisoners at five prison locations, using face to face interviews, history questionnaire, followed by visual inspection and audiometric procedures. For each test performed, an audiological report, with individual recommendations for appropriate follow up, was delivered to the prison Health Service. The study concluded that Victorian Indigenous prisoners have significantly more hearing problems than would be expected in the general Australian adult population. These findings are relevant to all agencies and services that have contact with Indigenous people, including police, courts, health and education.
