Identifying the broken bridges : an analysis of service gaps for Aboriginal young people at Children's Courts in New South Wales

Description

The overrepresentation of Aboriginal young people in the criminal justice system is an ongoing social problem. In 2005, Aboriginal young people accounted for 52 percent of 10 to 17 year olds in juvenile detention in New South Wales. This research has been undertaken to identify: the issues faced by Aboriginal young people involved with the criminal justice system; the level of culturally specific support services available to Aboriginal young people and their families when appearing in court; and the level of need for Aboriginal support workers at the Children’s Courts throughout New South Wales. The investigation demonstrated a strong need for more culturally specific court support services for these young people. (Executive summary, edited.)
