Indigenous-specific alcohol and other drug interventions: continuities, changes and areas of greatest need

Description

It is a commonly held view amongst those working in the Alcohol and other Drug sector that there is a need for further services for Indigenous Australians. This report prepared by the National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Committee provides detail on the Indigenous-specific alcohol and other drug intervention projects undertaken in 2006-2007, outlining funding, and appropriateness of these measures and providing recommendation for the future funding, targeting and planning of these projects. The monograph includes a discussion of the research groups methodology, the nature of Indigenous AOD use and related harms, a background to current AOD services and Indigenous specific interventions, how these projects are funded and the view of them from a working, service provider level. The report concludes with a discussion of findings, pointing to the funding, appropriateness and unmet needs displayed in AOD services and recommends future plans of action for addressing these limitations. These reccomendations include targeting gaps in service provision, building a capacity within Indigenous communities to address AOD related harms, resolving workforce issues in the community and support sector and making changes to the funding and planning of interventions.
