National Cannabis Strategy 2006-2009

Description

Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug in Australia. In November 2004, the Ministerial Council on Drug Strategy agreed to the development of a National Cannabis Strategy to consider the health, psychological, legal and public health issues associated with cannabis use. The objective of the strategy is to reduce the availability and demand for cannabis, and minimise related harms within the Australian community. It is aimed at the following sectors of the community: the broad population; the at-risk groups (young people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and those with mental health problems); all users of cannabis (even occasional users); and finally those with significant problems associated with use of cannabis. The following four priority areas have been determined as the focal points for the strategy: area one – community understanding of cannabis; area two – preventing use of cannabis; area three – preventing problems associated with cannabis; and area four – responding to problems associated with cannabis. A set of responses is included under each priority area, which encompass supply, demand and harm reduction strategies.
